"It takes a lot of courage to seek help for an eating disorder."
Eating disorders are about more than just food — they are coping strategies.
It takes a lot of courage to seek help for an eating disorder and I understand how scary it can be to think about making changes.
Understanding the reasons the eating disorder showed up and how it helps you in the here and now are key to recovery.
Once we understand the function of the eating disorder we can start to think about how we can work together to support you in moving forward, be it building a different way of relating to yourself and your body and/or developing alternative coping strategies for the challenges life throws at us.
Working on these elements will enable you to start to change your relationship with food and I will work alongside you, at a pace that suits you.
Myth
"My eating disorder isn't bad enough to get help."
Truth
Eating disorders affect people differently. It's not possible to tell if someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them. If you are struggling, your experience is valid — regardless of how it appears from the outside.
Myth
"Eating disorders only affect young white women."
Truth
Eating disorders affect people of any gender, age and ethnicity. Seeking help is always the right step, whatever your background.
We begin by making sense of what the eating disorder is doing for you — understanding the role it plays in your life right now, without judgement.
It's normal to feel ambivalent about change and for motivation to come and go. This is something we will think about together in therapy — it's part of the process, not a problem.
We explore alternative ways of relating to yourself and your body, and develop different coping strategies for the challenges life throws at us.
Working through the above elements enables you to start to change your relationship with food. I work alongside you at a pace that suits you. We will also discuss whether any physical health monitoring would be helpful and I can support you to liaise with your GP around this.

I have worked with so many people who did not seek help for years, believing their eating disorder to not be 'bad enough' and that they are not 'sick enough'. This is not the case.
